About this rug

A strict grid of octagonal guls repeats across this lovely rug. Set within a deep red field, rows of octagonal guls repeat in a strict grid, each holding gold and near-black geometric forms. Smaller diamond motifs fill the spaces between the larger figures. A handsome burgundy main border carries hooked vines and small rosettes in dark brown and cream. Narrow guard stripes with zigzag lines and tiny geometric marks edge the border on both sides. The pile is worn across much of the field, and the foundation shows through in pale specks where the red reads paler. It anchors a reading nook, letting the warm red ground steady the space. At 4'1" by 7'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

A Turkmen girl was already an experienced weaver by the time she was old enough to marry, often shortly before she turned twenty. A Turkmen storage bag, hung from the trellis walls of the tent, held the family’s belongings and worked something like a portable wardrobe. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that unvarying grid, setting the guls in even columns down the length of the field. A good Torkaman shifts between rust and brick as you cross the room; here the deep red holds that warmth without shifting far.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
