About this rug

Tan and cream gul motifs in a strict grid fill this lovely rug. Worked on a deep red field, rows of tan and cream gul motifs repeat in a strict grid with small cross shapes between them. The field is an all-over repeat with no medallion. A gorgeous burgundy main border carries a narrow lattice in dark blue and tan. Narrow guard stripes edge the border on both sides. A few patches have worn low over the red ground, and pale spots show across the lower half. It brings a warm red line to a narrow space, with the tan motifs breaking up the solid color. At 4'3" by 9', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

The name Bukhara was given to Turkmen rugs in error in the first half of the 20th century, though few Turkmen live around that city. UNESCO added traditional Turkmen carpet making to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. This rug keeps that strict grid of repeated figures and the deep red ground. The tan centers of the motifs stand out against the red. The burgundy border frames the repeating pattern.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
