Mirrored rows of palmettes in cream, tan and pink make this a lovely rug. Across a deep red field, scrolling vines link large palmettes in cream, tan and pink with smaller leaves in teal and sage. A charming spray of small flowers rises along the center line, with the palmettes set in mirrored rows on either side. The main border is cream, carrying a delicate scroll of teal leaves and red blossoms inside narrow guard stripes in teal and red. The pile is low in a few patches, where the weave shows pale. The teal notes cool the heavy red ground, and the rug stays warm overall. At 4'7" by 7'7", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
A special court workshop, possibly at Tabriz, is credited with translating the most splendid book illuminations into carpets. Since the late 19th century a complex design has usually reached the weavers as a cartoon, laid out on squared paper with one square for each knot. Tabriz in northwestern Persia has a city workshop tradition, and the discipline of the drawing shows it. The vine scrolls follow a plan laid out in full before weaving began. This rug keeps that plan in its mirrored rows of palmettes and the clean turns of the cream border at the corners. Cream, tan, pink and teal sit beside the red ground.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
