Paired near-black hexagons with cream cores make this a lovely rug. Paired near-black hexagons, each with a cream four-petal core, run down the burgundy field, with splendid red stars set between the pairs. Small cream triangles close the field at each end, and a cream zigzag band frames it on all four sides. The wide main border repeats small diamonds and hooked figures in red and near-black. Pile is low over the whole face, and the pale foundation shows through in small dots. It suits a room that wants deep warmth, where the cream cores and zigzag band lift the red and near-black. At 4'2" by 8'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

About Baluch rugs
A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Their palette is the darkest in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug holds that deep palette, with red and near-black set hard against one another. The cream zigzag band cuts a bright line around the field, and the paired hexagons run down its length.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
