Rows of red octagonal guls make this a lovely rug. Rows of handsome red octagonal guls repeat down the burgundy field, with zigzag lines in red crossing between them and near-black showing between the lines. Small diamonds and cream rosettes sit in the rows between the guls, down the center of the rug. The wide outer band is deep red, holding an angular repeat in brighter red and near-black. Narrow cream zigzag stripes run along the field on both sides. The pile is full across most of the face, with only a few pale specks showing. The deep red and near-black tones hold together in a narrow space without taking over. At 4'5" by 9'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. It has the darkest palette in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that repeating structure in its columns of octagonal guls set between zigzag lines. The deep red border repeats the angular drawing of the field and frames it evenly.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
