About this rug

Small geometric motifs in rose, green and cream are scattered across this charming rug. A burgundy field is scattered with small geometric motifs in rose, green and cream, with no central medallion to organize it. Dainty rosettes, bow-tie forms and small stepped squares repeat across the ground in an all-over layout. A mauve band forms the main border, set with handsome rose cartouches and small green accents. A deep red band with small near-black squares runs outside it, and a brown band of rose flowers runs inside. Thin guard stripes in rose and cream flank the border. Across the field, small low spots show the foundation as pale specks. In a narrow passage, the rose and green accents stay subtle against the red. At 4'2" by 8'7", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. Zanjan lies on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weavers borrowed from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, so many Zanjan pieces are runners. These are working rugs, not showpieces. This piece holds that geometric character in its small angular motifs. The mauve border sets rose cartouches around the scattered field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
