About this rug

Five stepped diamond medallions run down the center of this lovely rug. Set in a cream field, a column of five stepped diamond medallions runs down the center in deep red with near-black outlines. Each medallion holds a small geometric core, and serrated red edges step out against the pale ground. Small checkered diamonds fill the cream spaces beside the main shapes. A wide deep red border carries bold near-black hooked figures, with narrow zigzag and dotted stripes on either side of it. The field has worn lower in a few patches, with white flecks showing in the cream. It grounds a reading corner, and the bright cream center keeps the heavy red border from weighing the rug down. At 4'2" by 7'3", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable. This rug keeps that small format and the repeating column of geometric diamonds. The deep red border frames the lighter field with a strong near-black edge.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
