About this rug

A vertical lattice of burgundy hexagons and diamonds covers this delightful rug. Worked on a cream field, rows of burgundy hexagons and diamonds repeat in a vertical lattice. There is no central medallion, only this all-over pattern of geometric figures linked by burgundy bars. The splendid main border is deep red, carrying small cream crosses and hooked shapes. Narrow zigzag stripes run along the edges. The pile is full throughout. The warm red borders frame the lighter center. At 4' by 6'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Baluch weaving comes from semi-nomadic groups in eastern Persia and western Afghanistan, where portable looms kept sizes modest. Weavers there returned to a small stock of motifs, camp after camp. Here those figures fill the inner panel in tidy rows. The cream ground makes a bright setting for the burgundy and brown drawing.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
