A column of diamond medallions makes this an amazing rug. Set within a cream field, a column of splendid diamond medallions runs down the center, each filled with near-black and red geometric steps. Jagged near-black hooks reach into the open cream space between the central figures, while small red rosettes sit in the gaps. The main border is near-black, carrying a chain of red diamond shapes and stepped motifs. Narrow guard stripes of zigzag lines in cream and red frame the field on every side. The pile is full throughout. It brings a sharp graphic line to a small space, the bright cream keeping the near-black border from feeling heavy. At 3'8" by 6'2", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
Turkmen women wove the furnishings of the tent: carpets for floors and entryways, and smaller pieces made into bags and animal trappings. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict repetition in its stacked diamonds and the steady rhythm of the border. The cream field against the near-black drawing makes the geometric structure clear from across the room.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
