Hooked figures and small rosettes in a strict grid fill this lovely runner. A strict grid of cream hooked figures and small navy rosettes fills a brown field, linked by stepped geometric forms. A beautiful dark brown main border carries a chain of small figures in camel and teal. Narrow guard stripes in tan and navy edge the field on both sides. The pile is low in places across the face, where small white specks appear. The dense drawing keeps the eye moving along its length without resting on one spot. At 3'7" by 7'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A main carpet was the prized possession of the round Turkmen tent. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. The same strict grid holds here, set hard against the brown ground. The cream and navy figures stand out clearly, and the deep brown band encloses the whole composition.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
