Octagonal guls in deep red and burgundy repeat down this delightful rug. On a cream field, rows of beautiful octagonal guls in deep red and burgundy repeat down the length. Each gul holds a stepped diamond core picked out in near-black and ivory. Stepped panels in dark red close the top and bottom of the field instead of corner spandrels. The main border is cream, set with a chain of near-black and red diamonds, and a narrow red guard stripe edges it on both sides. The pile is full. It brings the warm reds and the open cream ground into a small space without crowding it. At 3'2" by 6'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Rugs of the tribal kind, the Baluch among them, are generally small and are woven on horizontal looms laid out on the ground. Among the Baluch a bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow often meant for the dowry, and balishts were usually woven in pairs. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This rug keeps that small format and the repeated gul, worked here in deep red and burgundy on a cream ground. The stepped panels at each end and the diamond-chain border carry the same geometric line as the field.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
