Tree-like figures in deep red and teal run down the middle of this lovely rug. A column of charming tree-like figures in deep red and teal runs down the middle of a tan field. A line of diamond shapes sits along the center axis, with smaller stepped motifs on either side. Two rectangular panels near the top hold larger stepped forms in the same colors. The wide burgundy border carries a sequence of angular geometric repeats. Thin bands with small diamond patterns in teal and red edge the wide band. Pale spots show where the pile has thinned across the face. It brings a warm, earthy tone to a narrow floor space, letting the red and teal details stand out against the tan ground. At 2'9" by 5'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This piece keeps that compact size and the steady repetition, with the figures arranged down the length. The tan ground provides a lighter base for the deep red and teal drawing, setting the angular shapes in clear relief.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
