About this rug

Two columns of stepped octagonal guls flank a central band on this lovely rug. Two columns of splendid stepped octagonal guls in faded red and rust sit on a camel ground, flanking a central band of narrow vertical stripes. The gorgeous outer border is rust with a zigzag line in cream and dark brown. Narrow guard stripes in near-black frame the drawing. A light antique wash has softened the colors without reaching the drawing. A few patches have worn low, and pale flecks mark where the weave sits thin. The warm red and earth tones suit a narrow passage. At 2'9" by 5'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. Baluch rugs come from the nomadic weavers of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan, and portable looms kept the sizes modest. Their designs return again and again to a few geometric motifs. This rug follows that habit in its two columns of guls. Red, camel and dark brown make up the palette here.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
