About this rug

Small stepped figures repeat on the gray beige field of this charming runner. On a gray beige field, rows of red and dark brown geometric motifs repeat in a diagonal lattice. No medallion interrupts the all-over pattern of small stepped figures. The gorgeous main border is burgundy, carrying black geometric figures and small red accents. Narrow guard stripes with cream and brown zigzags frame the field on every side. The pile is worn low across the field, and bare foundation shows in places. It suits a narrow passage, letting the deep red border ground the lighter center. At 3'2" by 6'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. Baluch rugs come from semi-nomadic weavers of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Portable looms kept the formats small, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug keeps that repeating structure, with the same small figures filling the field from end to end. Its gray beige ground is lighter than the deep red border that frames it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
