Two large stepped medallions outlined in tan sit on this charming rug. A gray beige field, washed pale, holds two large stepped medallions outlined in tan. Each medallion is a geometric hexagon with angular ends. A gorgeous rust border frames the rug. A full antique wash has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. The pile is worn low across much of the face, and the foundation shows through in pale patches. The pale ground and the rust edge sit in balance. At 3'9" by 5'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Sirjan rugs
Sirjan lies in Kerman province in southeastern Persia, on the edge of tribal country. Carpets from the Kerman area have been prized since the 16th century, and many of the finest vase and garden carpets of that age are now credited to Kerman. In the first half of the 20th century, rugs from Kerman province were sold in the West as Kermanshah, which is why the two names still get confused. The weaving mixes the softer Kerman palette with the geometry of the surrounding nomadic groups. Formats tend to be small to middling. This rug keeps those angular medallions and the mix of soft color with hard geometry. The tan outlines stand out on the pale ground.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
