Stepped geometric motifs in dark brown and gray beige cover this lovely rug. Stepped geometric motifs in dark brown and gray beige cover the muted pink field. A large hexagonal medallion anchors the center, holding a dainty star rosette within its dark core and extending stepped pendants toward the ends. Dark brown triangular pieces fill the top and bottom of the field, each carrying cream flower-like figures. The wide border is gray beige, filled with linked stepped crosses in brown. Narrow stripes in dark brown and cream edge it on both sides. Pile is short over the whole face, and the foundation shows in thin areas. It suits an entry, the soft pink ground keeping the dark geometry light. At 3'7" by 6', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Zanjan rugs
Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Its 50-meter dome, covered in turquoise-blue faience, is the earliest double-shelled dome surviving in Persia. In northwestern Persia, on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan, Zanjan has a village weaving that borrows from both. Geometric designs and long formats are the norm, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. They are working rugs rather than showpieces. Geometric designs and stepped outlines shape the entire pattern. This piece is shorter than the long accent rugs the district is known for, and it holds the bold, angular drawing of the region.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
