About this rug

Two joined ochre medallions sit inside a large stepped diamond on this charming rug. Set within a gray brown field, a large stepped diamond in a lighter pinkish gray brown holds two joined ochre medallions with small blue centers. Gorgeous dark gray brown corner pieces carry small pinwheel triangles in red and cream. A burgundy outer border holds a pale band of small figures, framed by narrow bands in beige and brown. The pile is thin across much of the ground, and the weave shows through in a few small dark specks and pale patches. Warm ochre and soft brown tones fill the weave. At 3'10" by 6'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Anatolian rugs

The carpets called “Holbein” were woven in Anatolia as early as the 14th century and became popular in Europe from the 15th century on. So many western Anatolian carpets shipped to Europe in the 1600s and 1700s were given to churches in Romania and Hungary that they became known as “Transylvanian” carpets. Anatolian is the broad name for the village weaving of the Turkish interior, and it covers a lot of ground. The shared character is geometry over floral drawing, and a palette that reads warmer and chalkier than Persian work. These were house rugs, woven to be used. This rug is geometric through and through: stepped diamonds and bold blocks take the place of curling vines. Its colors are soft and worn, gray brown and ochre in place of bright madder.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
