About this rug

Two hexagonal medallions in tan and a dusty rose field make this a lovely rug. On a dusty rose field, two hexagonal medallions in tan hold rose cores, with delicate slate blue and pink leaves around them. Gorgeous stepped spandrels in gray brown at both ends of the field carry small leaf shapes in rose and cream. A cream panel with dark brown motifs closes each end of the field. The main border is olive, set with large cream, rose and slate blue flowers on angular stems. A rose band of small rosettes and a fine zigzag line follow the inside of the border. A light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing. Pile runs low in a few small spots. Rose and tan tones soften the olive border along this warm runner for a hall. At 3'8" by 8', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Anatolian rugs

The nomadic herders of Turkey, the Yoruk, live in black goat-hair tents and travel between winter and summer pastures. From 1908 to 1914 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers employed 50 to 60 thousand carpet weavers in Anatolia alone, working at home. Anatolian is the broad name for the village weaving of the Turkish interior, and it covers a lot of ground. The shared character is geometry over floral drawing, and a palette that reads warmer and chalkier than Persian work: cream, rose, soft green, madder. These were house rugs, woven to be used. This piece holds to that geometric habit in its paired hexagonal medallions and stepped spandrels. The dusty rose field and olive border share a warm, chalky range, with small touches of slate blue in the drawing.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
