About this rug

A hexagonal medallion with a cream core makes this a lovely rug. Dusty rose covers the field, dotted with dark blue geometric motifs and small cream accents. A splendid central hexagonal medallion holds a cream core within a dark blue frame, linked by pendants to smaller diamond shapes above and below. The main border runs dark blue, set with a row of cream and brown rosettes. The pile is worn low across the field, and the foundation shows. A narrow passage suits this rug, where the rose and blue meet without competing. At 3'10" by 7'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Lori rugs

Until the early 20th century the tribes of southwestern Persia were mostly nomadic, moving between summer and winter pastures. Lori weaving comes from the Lur people of the western Zagros mountains, and it is tribal work in the proper sense. The rugs were woven on portable looms, in formats that suited a tent rather than a hall. The geometry is bold and slightly loose. This rug keeps that bold geometry in its stepped medallion and linked diamonds. The dusty rose field and dark blue drawing hold their identity despite the wear.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
