About this rug

Near-black octagonal guls repeat in tidy rows on this lovely runner. Across a faded red field, near-black octagonal guls and stepped diamond motifs repeat in tidy rows. There is no central medallion, only this all-over pattern of tribal emblems in near-black and deep red. The handsome main border is burgundy, carrying a scroll of small blossoms and leaves in near-black outline. Narrow zigzag stripes sit beside it. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The pile is full. It grounds a narrow passage with its deep, warm tones. At 2'9" by 6'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Their palette is the darkest in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug keeps that small format and the repeating gul motif across its length. The red field and near-black drawing hold to the deep palette of the region.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
