About this rug

Octagonal guls repeat in a strict grid on the deep red ground of this charming runner. On a deep red ground, rows of octagonal guls repeat in a strict grid, each holding a navy geometric emblem and a small cream diamond at its center. Black lines link the forms, with small ivory squares at the junctions. A beautiful black cherry border holds rows of small diamonds and zigzags, between narrow guard stripes of slanted dashes. The pile is low in some patches. It anchors a tight hallway, letting the cream accents break up the red field. At 2'11" by 6', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This rug keeps that small format, with the octagonal guls marching along it in ordered files.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
