Three octagonal guls run in a column down this lovely rug. Over a deep red field, a column of three octagonal guls runs down the center, each quartered with small geometric forms in near-black and red. Stepped hooks flank the central emblems on the open ground. The splendid main border is deep red, carrying a band of small near-black geometric repeats, edged by thin bands of repeating motifs. Pale specks show in a few spots where the foundation sits close to the surface. It suits a reading chair or an entry bench, with the saturated red holding the space. At 3'3" by 5'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This piece keeps that compact scale and a vertical column of guls. The bright red ground gives the near-black pattern a sharp edge.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
