Stepped diamond guls in rows repeat across this delightful rug. At the center, rows of stepped diamond guls fill a deep red field, each holding a black and camel core. Small geometric motifs sit between the columns on the open ground. The handsome main border is burgundy, carrying a chain of hooked diamonds in black. Narrow bands of zigzag lines frame it on both sides. The pile is full on every part of the rug. It grounds a reading chair, and the black drawing holds the bright red steady. At 3'4" by 4'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that small scale and the repeating geometric vocabulary across its face. The deep red field carries the stepped diamonds in orderly rows, set against the burgundy border.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
