The round central medallion of this lovely rug has a deep indigo ground. Worked on a deep red field, the open ground holds a single central motif. A gorgeous round medallion sits at the center, its deep indigo ground set with dainty gold and terracotta boteh around a small rosette core. The field has no corner pieces. A narrow striped edge in olive, rust and black frames the field. The pile is low in places, and pale flecks mark where the foundation shows across the red ground. At 3'1" by 4'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Shahreza rugs
Shahreza lies south of Isfahan in central Persia and is also known by its older name, Qumsheh. In 1597 to 1598 Shah Abbas I moved the Safavid capital to Isfahan, the city that gives Shahreza’s province its name. Under his patronage carpet weaving became a major industry, and fine Persian rugs began to appear in the homes of wealthy European burghers. The weaving takes the floral vocabulary of the Isfahan district and works it at village scale, with simpler drawing and a warmer, less formal palette. This rug keeps that floral vocabulary in its central medallion, worked at a smaller scale on a warm red ground. The wide open field leaves the single indigo and gold motif to carry the whole drawing.

Full care guideReturns

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
