Two large brown lozenges form a central column on this charming rug. Over a deep red field, a lattice of small diamonds in cream, gold, green and blue repeats across the width. Two large brown lozenges form a central column, each holding a cross shape in steel blue and pink. The field reaches the border without corner pieces, letting the pattern fill the space. A gorgeous cream main border carries small multicolor dots. Pile runs low in spots across the red ground, where small white specks show. It suits a corner, holding the warm red and earth tones in place. At 3'1" by 4'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
The biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia in the late 19th century was the Ziegler company of Arak, the town then called Sultanabad. A hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad wove rugs for its market, by the count of Walter Hawley, writing in 1913. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the start. That means a wide field and generous spacing between the motifs. This rug keeps the open field and the calm spacing found in those larger weavings. The diamond lattice and the brown central column set a steady rhythm against the red ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
