A large navy diamond medallion sits on this delightful rug. The deep red field holds a large navy diamond medallion filled with ochre and orange geometric forms. Four dainty octagonal rosettes sit in the red corners, each framing a navy star, and small hooked motifs fill the red ground around the diamond. A gorgeous cream main border carries stepped motifs in navy and rust, flanked by a brown guard stripe set with small blossoms. The pile is full across the face. It brings warm earth tones to a small space without overwhelming it. At 3'3" by 5'2", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Malayer rugs
The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a carpet of 1850 to 1875 in the Mahi design that it catalogs as possibly Hamedan or Malayer. Rugs from the villages around Hamedan were taken to the city, long one of the great rug markets of Persia, and were often sold abroad under its name. Malayer sits between Hamedan and Arak in western Persia, which is exactly where its weaving sits too. It joins the village tradition of Hamedan with the floral drawing of the Arak district. This rug keeps the bold geometry of the village tradition in its stepped border and angular medallion. Varied ochre and orange shapes pack the navy ground inside the central diamond, filling it more densely than simpler village work.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
