About this rug

Columns of hexagonal guls run down the deep red field of this charming rug. The deep red field holds columns of gorgeous hexagonal guls in teal, camel and near-black. Smaller diamond shapes run down the center between the larger motifs, and stepped triangles line the sides of the field. A splendid burgundy main border carries a repeat of small geometric marks in black cherry and teal, closed by slim lines in camel and dark red. A few patches of pile have worn thin, and white specks show the foundation through the red. It holds the deep red and teal accents in a narrow space without crowding the floor. At 2'11" by 5'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that compact size and the recurring angular vocabulary across its face. The deep red ground holds the teal and camel guls in steady columns down the length, while the burgundy border closes the edges with near-black angular marks.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
