A stepped medallion outline and a column of small forms run down this lovely runner. The faded red field holds small geometric motifs in cream and brown. A stepped medallion outline with a column of small forms runs down the center. Handsome dark navy spandrels carry dense geometric figures in orange and cream. The border runs deep red, set with rows of small motifs in cream, and a narrow stripe runs beside it. The pile is worn low across much of the field, with open weave along the center. A narrow passage shows off the warm red against the floor. At 2'10" by 6'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Zanjan rugs
The province of Zanjan holds Soltaniyeh, once the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, where the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. Zanjan lies on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weavers borrowed from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, so long narrow rugs are common. These are working rugs, not showpieces. This rug keeps the stepped drawing and the long format. The medallion outline and the navy corner pieces sit in a field of warm red.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
