About this rug

Rows of small boteh shapes repeat around a central diamond medallion in this charming rug. Over a faded red field, rows of small boteh shapes repeat around a central diamond medallion. The splendid medallion holds a geometric core in blue and ochre. Cream corner pieces carry rows of lovely red boteh against the pale ground. A border of angular forms in red and dark brown encloses the design. The pile has thinned in a few patches, revealing the weave beneath. Red and cream meet in even measure across this small space. At 3'3" by 5'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Botteh rugs

The boteh, mostly known now as the paisley, is an ancient Persian design based on the tree of life and inspired by buds, cones and palm fronds. The shawls of the Scottish town of Paisley were so prominent on the market that the boteh has been called the paisley ever since. Not a place but a motif, botteh is the teardrop with the bent tip that Europe later borrowed and called paisley. The boteh is the organizing figure of rugs cataloged this way, repeated across the field in rows. It appears everywhere from the tribal south to the city workshops of the center. This rug keeps that repeated figure in the red field, set in diagonal rows around the central diamond. The cream corner pieces frame the dense pattern with clear geometric lines.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
