About this rug

An ivory lattice core sits in the large central medallion of this charming runner. On a red field, dark brown geometric figures and stepped motifs fill the length of this narrow rug. A large central medallion holds an ivory lattice core, flanked by handsome dark brown panels with red tree forms. Smaller square devices sit at the top and bottom ends. The main border carries a red and ivory zigzag. Thin ivory lines edge the field on both sides. Dark brown triangular shapes sit in the lower corners. The pile has worn low in a few patches, and the foundation shows. The dense drawing keeps the red and dark brown grounded against the ivory accents. At 2'11" by 6'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

A Turkmen girl was already an experienced weaver by the time she was old enough to marry, often shortly before she turned twenty. A Turkmen storage bag, hung from the trellis walls of the tent, held the family’s belongings and worked something like a portable wardrobe. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This narrow rug keeps that strict geometry, with a central column of stepped shapes instead of a scattered grid. The red shifts between deep tones and lighter brick across the worn surface.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
