About this rug

Geometric motifs surround a central diamond medallion on this charming rug. Across a rust field, geometric motifs in dark blue, cream and brown fill the space around a central diamond medallion. The medallion holds a small orange core and steps out in dark blue and cream layers, with pendants reaching toward the top and bottom. Dark blue triangles anchor the four corners of the inner field. The handsome main border runs deep red, carrying angular motifs in brown, cream and dark blue. Narrow guard stripes in brown and cream frame the border on both sides. The pile is low in places, and the foundation shows through in scattered patches across the field. Dark blue notes cool the dominant rust across this warm accent. At 2'8" by 5'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This rug keeps the geometric vocabulary of the region, with stepped forms and strong contrast between the rust ground and the dark blue accents. Its layout centers a single diamond medallion within a field of scattered motifs, framed by a bold red border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
