About this rug

Stylized geometric figures repeat in rows on this wonderful rug. Rows of stylized geometric figures in navy, dark red and pale green cover the red field, with small diamond shapes filling the gaps between them. The design has no focal point, relying instead on this repeating column of tribal motifs running down the length of the rug. A handsome navy main border frames the drawing, carrying a chain of pretty rosettes in pink, green and rust. Thin guard bands with tiny cross marks divide the edge from the field. The pile is full over the face and in the borders. It brings a strong graphic note to a small space, the bright accents standing out against the red ground. At 2'7" by 5'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Lori rugs

Until the early 20th century the tribes of southwestern Persia were mostly nomadic, moving between summer and winter pastures. Lori weaving comes from the Lur people of the western Zagros mountains, and it is tribal work in the proper sense. The rugs were woven on portable looms, in formats that suited a tent rather than a hall. The geometry is bold and slightly loose, and the colors are strong. This piece keeps that bold geometry in its rows of abstract figures, each one built from stepped lines and diamonds. A saturated red ground and the navy border hold the bright pale green and gold details in a clear, high-contrast layout.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
