About this rug

Stepped red octagons make this a charming rug. Rows of stepped red octagons cover the near-black ground, though the field can look burgundy at first glance. Each figure centers on a small cross shape in terracotta and cream. Cream panels at the top and bottom hold small red animals and plant forms against the light ground. A splendid deep red border carries a navy zigzag vine, framed by thin bands of small geometric checks. Pile has thinned through the middle, and white specks of foundation appear. It makes a near-black, graphic accent for a slim hall, and the cream ends lift the heavy center. At 2'9" by 5'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. The looms were portable, so the formats are small. This rug keeps that scale and the column of octagonal shapes down the length of the field. The near-black ground sets the red and cream details apart, and the animals at each end add a lighter note.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
