Rows of cream rosettes make this a charming rug. Rows of cream rosettes and red geometric figures cover the burgundy field. No single medallion anchors the design; small flower heads repeat down the center in alternating bands. The gorgeous main border runs deep red with stepped motifs on a near-black ground, framed by a narrow guard stripe of cream hooks on a near-black ground. The pile is low in places, and the foundation shows through in scattered patches. Cream accents pick out the heavy reds across this deep-toned piece underfoot. At 2'11" by 6'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug keeps a deep range, with burgundy and near-black carrying the weight while cream picks out the small flowers. The layout repeats a simple column of motifs down the length.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
