About this rug

An all-over lattice of geometric forms runs the length of this lovely rug. Rows of stepped diamonds and hooked shapes in red and near-black fill the deep red field. There is no central medallion, only this all-over lattice of geometric forms running the length of the rug. A beautiful cream border carries small rosettes and near-black geometric figures, edged by narrow zigzag stripes in red and black. Pale specks across the field show the foundation where the pile has worn low. The dense drawing holds the red and black in a tight, rhythmic pattern. At 3'1" by 6', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This rug keeps that small format and the repeating geometric vocabulary, with stepped diamonds and hooked edges filling the field. The cream border adds a sharp contrast to the red and near-black interior.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
