About this rug

Two columns of cream diamond medallions run down this lovely runner. Over a burgundy field, two columns of gorgeous cream diamond medallions with near-black stepped cores run down the length. Small geometric motifs in near-black and rust sit in the gaps between the medallions, with a stepped lozenge at each core. The splendid main border carries near-black angular patterns on a red ground, framed by thin guard stripes of cream marks. Pale patches mark where the pile has worn low across the field and border. The burgundy and cream pairing gives a narrow space a clear focal line. At 3'5" by 6'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug keeps the compact size and the repeated diamond shapes down its length.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
