About this rug

Small octagonal guls, three across, repeat in rows on this lovely rug. The burgundy field carries rows of small octagonal guls, three across, each holding a small cream hooked figure on a darker ground. There is no central medallion, only this all-over repeat. A border of small geometric figures in dark brown runs around all four sides. Pile has worn down over most of the field, with pale scrapes along the left side where the foundation shows. It brings a deep, grounded warmth to a narrow space, the cream figures lifting the heavy red. At 3'4" by 6'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. It has the darkest palette in the Persian repertoire, with aubergine, deep madder and indigo so deep it reads as brown. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This rug keeps that dark palette and the repeating gul. The guls sit close together in a tight grid, three across and nine down.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
