Rows of stepped diamond medallions repeat down the length of this lovely rug. On a burgundy field, rows of stepped diamond medallions in deep red and near-black repeat down the length, outlined with small cream hooks and muted pink accents. The splendid main border is black cherry, carrying a dense lattice of small diamonds in deep red. Slim cream and orange stripes edge the wide band on both sides. The pile is low in places across the middle, where the red reads paler and white specks appear. It anchors a narrow passage, letting the deep reds and near-black geometry settle the space. At 3'7" by 6'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Rugs of the tribal kind, the Baluch among them, are generally small and are woven on horizontal looms laid out on the ground. Among the Baluch a bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow often meant for the dowry, and balishts were usually woven in pairs. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug repeats a diamond lattice from end to end, with near-black geometry set against the burgundy ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
