About this rug

Columns of stepped diamond figures repeat down the length of this charming rug. Burgundy covers the field, where columns of stepped diamond figures appear in near-black and cream. The geometric lattice repeats down the length without a central medallion, keeping the red ground clear between the near-black forms. A wide burgundy border holds rows of small black diamonds, framed by narrow guard stripes with diagonal marks. A few patches show pale spots where the foundation appears. The deep red and near-black geometry gives a small floor space a strong focus. At 3'4" by 6'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. Rugs of the tribal kind, the Baluch among them, are generally small and are woven on horizontal looms laid out on the ground. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Their palette is the darkest in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug keeps that deep palette and the repeating geometric motifs within a compact size. The stepped diamond lattice fills the field in strict columns, framed by bands of small geometric shapes.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
