Three stacked square panels with a bright red ground make this a charming rug. Across a burgundy field, rows of near-black geometric shapes fill the space around three stacked square panels. Each panel holds a bright red ground with a cream and brown stepped motif at its center. A beautiful deep red main border carries near-black angular patterns, framed by narrow guard stripes in cream and black. A few patches show thinner pile, and small white specks appear where the weave is low. In a corner, the dark red and near-black drawing stays close. At 3'2" by 5'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. It has the darkest palette in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that deep palette, with near-black shapes set hard against the burgundy ground. The three stacked panels repeat one stepped motif down the length.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
