A repeating grid of near-black diamonds runs from end to end on this lovely rug. The burgundy field holds a repeating grid of near-black diamonds and red geometric forms. No central medallion sits in the middle, as the pattern repeats evenly from end to end. A gorgeous cream main border carries small red stars and near-black geometric marks around the edge. Narrow near-black lines frame this light band on the inside and the outside. The pile is worn low across the field, and the foundation shows in pale patches. It brings deep warmth to a small space, with the red and cream working together. At 3'6" by 5'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs. This rug keeps that small format and the repeating geometric motifs across the whole field. The burgundy and near-black tones sit against the cream border in a clear, simple layout.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
