About this rug

Large diamond medallions run along the length of this lovely runner. A near-black field is packed with deep red geometric forms. Large diamond medallions stack along the length, each holding a red cross-shaped motif and small stepped shapes. Smaller red diamonds fill the near-black spaces between the main figures. The gorgeous main border is deep red with a repeat of small cream-centered diamonds, framed by narrow guard stripes of cream triangles. Thin spots appear here and there, with white specks where the foundation shows. It anchors a narrow passage, and the near-black ground steadies the red. At 3'1" by 6'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug sets its drawing on a near-black ground. The red drawing stands out against the black, and the diamonds step down the length of the piece.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
