About this rug

A repeating grid of tribal emblems covers this charming rug. Rows of beautiful diamond guls and hooked shapes cover the burgundy field in deep red, indigo and cream. A central medallion is absent, leaving only this repeating grid of tribal emblems worked across the length. The main border is near-black, carrying a dense geometric pattern in dark red. A narrow guard stripe of cream triangles edges the field. Pile runs thin here and there, with a few white specks of foundation showing. The dense drawing holds the deep reds and dark blues together in a tight, warm pattern. At 2'11" by 5'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. It has the darkest palette in the Persian repertoire, with aubergine, deep madder and indigo so deep it reads as brown. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This piece retains the compact size and the repeating diamond motif across its length. The burgundy field and near-black outlines stay within the deep color range of the region.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
