About this rug

Three burgundy rectangular panels run in a column down this amazing rug. Rows of dark brown and deep red geometric figures cover the rust field. A column of three burgundy rectangular panels runs down the center, each holding a handsome cream-outlined diamond with a red cross at its core. Small stepped motifs and hooked shapes fill the open ground between the panels. The outer frame is burgundy, carrying cream and red geometric repeats. Thin guard stripes with zigzag lines in cream and red border the inner drawing. The pile is full from end to end. A warm path runs through the narrow space, with burgundy panels set against the rust field. At 3' by 6'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Baluch rugs were woven by semi-nomadic families across eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Small, portable looms favored compact formats and a handful of well-loved motifs. In this piece the panels and small stepped figures repeat down the whole length. The rust ground gives a vivid backdrop for the deep red and dark brown drawing.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
