About this rug

This wonderful rug has a central diamond medallion in deep red and dark blue. A cream field holds a handsome central diamond medallion in deep red and dark blue, with a small rosette at its core. Red pendants link this center to two floral sprays in blue and teal that reach toward the ends. Blue corner pieces filled with graceful pink blossoms curve into the cream ground. A broad blue band of scrolled shapes frames the field, inside a burgundy border of small flower heads and a brown guard stripe. The pile is full over the face. The cream ground keeps the red and blue notes light in a bright space. At 2'6" by 4'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Lilihan rugs

In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. It had its rugs made less complex than traditional Persian carpets, so that they would not look out of place in European homes. Lilihan is a village in the Arak district of central Persia, and its weaving is close kin to Sarouk. The field is floral, worked in curved lines rather than angles. This rug keeps those curved lines in its floral sprays and the lobed outline of the central medallion. The cream ground sets the red and blue motifs against a pale background, leaving the drawing open and clear across the small format.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
