Brown vines and rosettes scatter around a charming stepped medallion. Across a beige field, graceful brown vines and small rosettes scatter around a central stepped medallion. The medallion has a gray beige ground, a small beige diamond at its core, and near-black bird shapes set in pairs around it. A splendid pointed pendant closes the shape at the top and another at the bottom. The wide main border has a gray beige ground carrying dark brown stars and small tulip shapes. Narrow dark brown guard stripes with a small pale pattern frame the wide band on either side. The pile is low across the lower third, where the colors turn paler and the foundation shows through in places. The dark brown drawing keeps the beige in this corner from looking plain. At 2'9" by 4'2", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ardabil rugs
The Ardabil Carpet in London, made for the shrine of the Safavid shahs at Ardabil, carries the year 946 in its inscription, equivalent to 1539-40. After an earthquake damaged the shrine it was sold to a Manchester firm, and the Victoria and Albert Museum bought it in 1893. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border. This rug sets a stepped medallion in a field of curling vines and small rosettes. Its palette stays within brown and beige, with the gray beige of the medallion and border lifting the browns.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
