About this rug

This lovely rug has a strict grid of diamond guls on a tan field. The tan field carries a strict grid of diamond guls in dark brown and burgundy, with small olive touches between the rows. No central medallion sits here, only an all-over repeat of tribal emblems. No corner pieces break the grid. A handsome dark brown main border holds a row of small geometric marks, framed by narrow guard stripes with a zigzag line. The pile is low in places, and pale areas show where the weave is thin. It holds the dark brown drawing steady against the lighter ground. At 3'3" by 4'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

The Salor, Tekke, Yomut and Ersari tribes each wove a recognizable variety of the Turkmen design. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers repeat the octagonal gul in an orderly grid with almost no variation. Here the diamonds stand in even columns down the length. The dark brown and burgundy figures read clearly against the tan ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
