A large hexagonal medallion in dark blue and deep red sits on this delightful rug. The cream field holds a large hexagonal medallion in dark blue and deep red, with a smaller diamond above and below it. Stepped, hooked forms and deep red triangles fill the field around the medallion, and the upper corners turn dark navy. Several narrow bands in gold, blue and red frame the field, and one band carries small orange rosettes. The pile is full across the field and the medallion. It settles the strong red and blue notes against the light ground in a small space. At 3'7" by 4'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

About Vist rugs
Vist is a village in the Isfahan region, southwest of Khansar and close to Golpayegan. In nearby Golpayegan, the Friday Mosque has a Seljuk dome chamber dated by its mihrab inscription to 1114 to 1115. A study calls the Vist rug the best-known rug of the country south and southwest of Golpayegan. Vist designs lean on straightforward geometry rather than fine curves. This rug keeps that geometry in its stepped medallion and hooked forms. The dark blue and deep red shapes stand out clearly against the cream ground, and the framing bands keep the edge busy and colorful.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
