A strict grid of octagonal gul motifs covers the tan ground of this lovely rug. The tan field holds a strict grid of gorgeous octagonal gul motifs in deep red and near-black, with smaller cross shapes filling the spaces between. A wide burgundy border frames the center, carrying panels of pretty geometric rosettes in cream and dark brown. Narrow guard stripes edge the main border on both sides. The pile is low in places across the field. The warm red balances against the open ground, giving the pattern a strong graphic rhythm. At 4'2" by 5'1", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A main carpet was the most important and expensive weaving of every Turkmen tribe, and the main floor covering of the tent. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, and it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that rigid structure, setting the dark red figures hard against the light ground. The deep red and near-black details stay distinct within each shape.

Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
