About this rug

A large navy medallion with stepped edges sits on this charming rug. Over a faded red field, a large navy medallion with stepped edges holds a cream geometric core. Salmon and cream blossoms fill the dark blue shape, while short pendants reach toward the top and bottom. Dark brown spandrels occupy the four corners, carrying angular motifs that mirror the central figure. The handsome main border is cream, set with red and navy flower heads. A narrow dark brown guard stripe separates the border from the field. The pile is low in places, and the red reads paler across the center. The navy drawing holds the lighter red tones together in a warm corner. At 4'1" by 6'1", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Saveh rugs

The story goes that Saveh held one of the greatest libraries of the East until the Mongols destroyed it on their first invasion of Persia. An English consul named Abbott, who passed through Saveh in 1849, called it the most ruinous town he had ever seen. Saveh lies between Tehran and Arak in central Persia, on old caravan ground. The village weaving here sits between the geometric north and the floral center: medallions with straight edges, but filled with vine and blossom. This rug keeps that mix, with a stepped medallion outline enclosing floral sprays. The dark brown corners and cream border frame the red field clearly, giving the piece a defined structure despite the low pile.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
